(Really Gross) Tea For Two, Anyone?

My acupuncturist started me on a Chinese Herbal Medicine regimen almost immediately to begin my path to fertility.  I remember her asking if I would drink a certain type of concoction that was like tea.  She said it would taste really gross.  “Tea For Two, Anyone?”.  Drinking a disgusting tasting tea to get pregnant...How hard could it be?  However, she decided to start with the herbs that came in pill form first.  We could always backtrack to the nastiest tea ever!  I never had the chance to drink the concoction, but I would have in a heartbeat.

Before administering the herbal medicine, she explained to me that I had Kidney Yang deficiency.  Kidney Yang Deficiency is the inability to conceive, prolonged menstrual cycles, small volume of pale menstrual discharge (in some cases amenorrhea), accompanied by dull complexion, lassitude, cold extremities, lower backache, and weakness of the legs, poor libido, copious clear urine, and formless stools.

Each person in Traditional Chinese Medicine is unique so no two regimens are the same.  My path included many other non traditional paths to getting pregnant like making some dietary changes (NAET) and taking Yoga for fertility (which I write about both in another blog).  All of the changes I made were very helpful on my journey to get pregnant.

A brief explanation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM):

TCM is thousands of years old and has changed little over the centuries. Its basic concept is that a vital force of life, called Qi, surges through the body.  Any imbalance to Qi can cause disease and illness. This imbalance is most commonly thought to be caused by an alteration in the opposite and complementary forces that make up the Qi. These are called yin and yang.

Ancient Chinese believed that humans are microcosms of the larger surrounding universe, and are interconnected with nature and subject to its forces. Balance between health and disease is a key concept. TCM treatment seeks to restore this balance through treatment specific to the individual.
