Let’s Get Loud About Dental Care For Fertility

The Prize...that’s what dentists use at the end of each session to get you to come back and to say thanks for visiting.  It might be the only reason I enjoyed going as a kid.

The impact of dental care on conception is greatly underestimated and is often overlooked.  I have recently begun some work on my teeth and came across some reading about teeth care and fertility that I found interesting.

The health of gums is very important to conceiving and carrying to term.  Dental checkups for you and your partner for gum disease only helps in the endeavor.  It may seem like a small thing, but it does affect the overall health of you and the baby.

According to the Journal of the American Dental Association, for women, gum disease causes:

Premature delivery

An increase risk of miscarriage

May also increase the time it takes to get pregnant

Peridontitis causes an immune response that results in inflammation throughout the circulatory system.  The relationship between gum disease and misscarriage or premature birth is thought to be due to either the systemic inflammation that results from the bacterial infection or the

bacteria from the gums making their way into the amniotic fluid and causing a local immune response, which in turns increase  the risk of misccariage or premature birth. (It Starts With The Egg, Rebecca Fett, 2014).

For Men, periodontal disease has been shown to:

have a positive association with reduced sperm quality,

cause an increase in the concentration of the bacteria in the ejaculate, a condition which is believed to lower the fertility of the male. (Inflammation and Infertility, Brockette, 2018)
