Nourish Yourself - The Gut-Brain Connection

“A well functioning gut with healthy flora holds the roots of our health.  And, just as a tree with sick roots is not going to thrive, the rest of the body cannot thrive without a well-functioning digestive system.” (Gut and Psychology Syndrome, Campbell-McBride, 2010)  It was natural for me to use this as a starting point for my journey.  My acupuncturist was very helpful, but I needed more help.  I wish there was someone that could shop and cook for me.  Since this wasn’t an option, I had to learn it on my own.  

These are the changes I made to achieve fertility...


Significantly reduced:

Refined carbohydrates such as white bread and highly processed foods 🍞

Added sugars and other sweeteners 🍬

Gluten and dairy if you have an inflammatory or autoimmune condition🐄

Caffeine and alcohol🥤


Included more:

🍚Slowly digested carbohydrates such as wild rice, oats, lentils

🥕Starchy, bright colored vegetables (sweet potato, winter squash, pumpkin and carrots)

🥗Leafy green and other non starchy vegetables

🍓Moderate amounts of fruit

🐟Lean, unprocessed protein (fish, chicken and beans)

🥑Healthy fats (Olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds)

🌊Water


The Mediterranean way of eating emphasizes vegetables, healthy fats, legumes and seafood. All of which are higher in specific vitamins and fatty acids associated with lower inflammation and improved fertility so consider this one if possible.
