The 4 Vitamins That Helped Change My Unexplained Infertility

My unexplained infertility diagnosis put me on a path to a healthier lifestyle and well-being.  Vitamins are now a big part of my morning routine!

While some may argue that you can get all your essential vitamins from foods and beverages, this has been proven to be difficult.  Our foods lack the same nutrients they had long ago, in part, because the soil they are growing in is not the same.  I can go into a whole history of foods and soil. For now,  let’s stay with the subject of vitamins for egg quality.

My acupuncturist recommended various vitamins and lots of chinese herbs to get my egg quality where it needed to be.  I am a huge advocate for vitamin supplements. They put the power back into your hands.  There is no prescription needed and no matter what the outcome, they make us healthier and all the more wiser.

Start with:

1. Prenatal vitamin

2. Folate - prevents serious birth defects and helps with the development of eggs.  Your prenatal vitamin should include at least 800 mcg of methylfolate.

3. CoQ10 - helps with energy production inside developing eggs and better yet decreases chromosomal problems.  Look for ubiqionol or Bio-Quinon.  Start with 200 mg taken with food.

4. Vitamin D - most people are deficient, more so if they reside in an area with colder, darker seasons.  (My kids and I start taking Vitamin D after September 20 to late March for the fall and winter as well as many other supplements  - a big thanks to our pediatrician who helped us navigate winter in a healthier way)  They recommend taking 5000 IU per day or if you have a significant deficiency, start with 10,000 IU per day for two weeks.

Depending upon age and method of conception, there are other supplements that are recommended:

Vitamin C - helpful for women with unexplained infertility.

Vitamin E - benefits egg quality.

Alpha-lipoic acid - improves fertility specifically egg maturation and embryo viability.

This is just the start, especially if you suffer from PCOS, normal ovulation, endometriosis, miscarriages, or if you are trying to conceive through IUI or IVF. There are other supplements that you can take to improve egg quality and rebalance hormones.  Consulting someone you trust is always helpful before beginning a new regimen of any kind.

Be Well! Carry On, Goddesses!
